In this edition of “Review Insights Report”, hoteliers get an overview of the DACH travel market in 2021: market development, online bookings, and guest rating analyses.
These are some of the results of the report:
Switzerland’s hotel industry recorded 29.6 million overnight stays in 2021. As a result, it represents a 24.6% increase over 2020. Tourism contributes 2.9% to Switzerland’s gross value added.
Experience is that Europe will be the first to recover and surpass pre-pandemic levels due to its high vaccination rates. The DACH market should benefit accordingly.
In 2021, domestic travel was prevalent. In 2021, half of all holiday trips from Germany took place in the country. As compared to the pre-Corona year 2019: 34%. Austria and Switzerland also showed similar trends.
In the planning and booking process, smartphones are becoming increasingly popular with a constant annual increase in users. An estimated third of social media users get inspiration for their holidays from these channels.
In 2021, 80% of short trips (2-4 days) got booked online. When it came to trips lasting five days or more, it was still 54 %.
The number of travel apps downloaded in Europe increased by 104 % between 2020 and 2021.Booking.com increased its review volume the most in the DACH region. There is no surprise here – Booking.com dominates the European market. Booking.com held a market share of 67.7% in 2019.
The number of overnight bookings via OTAs increased slightly during the pandemic in Switzerland. Approximately 3 %more bookings than the pre-pandemic year 2019 (40,7 %).
