The COVID-19 outbreak halts global tourism. According to OECD figures, travel accounted for 4.4% of GDP and 6.9 % of employment before the Covid-19 outbreak. WTO statistics indicate that international travel contributed 6.5% to global exports in 2019.
Travel and tourism account for more than 330 million jobs worldwide, or one in ten of all employment, according to the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC).
COVID-19 devastates a thriving industry that depends on the free movement of people. As of March 2020, international travel came to a grinding halt, and many countries restricted access to their borders.
According to the World Tourism Organization, international arrivals fell by 70 to 75% in 2020, with 1 billion fewer travellers and 1.1 billion dollars less spent.
In the aftermath of the Covid-19 crisis, tourism will be among the last sectors of the economy to recover lost demand.
