Today August 1st, Switzerland celebrates its 731st birthday! Happy Birthday, Switzerland!
So let’s briefly examine some of the most essential occurrences!
“Three Alpine cantons (Schwyz, Uri and Unterwald) swore the oath of confederation” on the date of the Federal Charter of 1291, Pacte du Rütli. In the mid-13th to mid-14th century, several dozen pacts were attested for the territory of Switzerland, and this document was considered the founding of Switzerland. Most of the Old Swiss Confederacy was founded by the Bund of Brunnen of 1315 or by Aegidius Tschudi’s Rütlischwur of 1307. In a report by the Federal Department of Home Affairs on 21 November 1889, the Federal Department of Home Affairs suggested combining the 700th anniversary of the city of Bern with the 600th anniversary of the Confederacy in 1891. In the 20th century, the Federal Charter replaced the more prominent, traditional date of 8 November Rütlischwur, 1307 in popular consciousness, particularly after the 650th-anniversary celebrations of 1941.
It became an official holiday in 1994 after a popular federal initiative in its favour was accepted.
A paper lantern parade, bonfires, Swiss flag strings, and fireworks are held yearly to celebrate the 1 August holiday.
This year’s Holiday will have to pass with reduced fireworks due to the heat, but it will be no less festive.

It took 600 hours to make the 6,400-square-metre banner featuring the white cross on a red field, according to Heimgartner flag company.
