According to a ranking of 28 top European destinations, Lausanne has the smallest carbon footprint of any European city. Destinations in Europe with the highest sustainability standards in 2022
Bounce’s list of Europe’s Most Sustainable Destinations ranks the most environmentally friendly and sustainable cities in Europe. Factors taken into account by the company in calculating the ranking include:
- According to Booking.com, the number of “Travel Sustainable Properties” in the city
- The percentage of people who walk, cycle, or take public transportation to work or school
- Air quality
- Energy efficiency through the use of renewable resources
- Light pollution
- Per capita carbon footprint
- Restaurants with Michelin green stars – the most sustainable restaurants
Every city is then assigned an average score out of 10 based on their scores in each category.
The top eco-friendly destinations are Berlin, Stockholm, and Zurich
With a score of 6.98 out of 10, Berlin was ranked the most eco-friendly city destination in Europe this year. Berlin highly acclaimesfor its number of eco-friendly restaurants and hotels. In addition, 84,3 % of residents commute using German public transport without driving, with the highest proportion walking, cycling, or using public transportation for work.
Zürich, Switzerland – 6.56 sustainable city score
One of the most expensive cities in Europe, Zürich is the financial capital of Switzerland. However, as the largest Swiss city, Zurich has the least light pollution (114μcd/m2) and has a low carbon footprint (11t CO2). It also operates the second-highest share of greener ways of commuting (82%As well, it runs the second-highest percentage of greener ways of commuting (82%).
Getting around Zürich is easy, thanks to the city’s efficient public transportation system. Every 300m to the town is services by a bus or tram stop. Furthermore, Zürich has a cap-and-trade system for parking, which means that another one must be removed for every new parking space. As a result of this method of reducing the use of cars in the city, travellers are encouraged to use the efficient and affordable public transportation system in Zurich.
