A new trend in cybercrime targeting travel companies
The topic of Cybersecurity and Cybercriminals are becoming more and more pressing and frightening for all travel professionals. For that reason, we got inspired by a text at PhocusWire and decided to share some of it here. Travel brands such as Uber, InterContinental Hotels Group, and Marriott International have recently been hacked by hackers, so it is not surprising that cyber breaches are making headlines daily. Experts say that cybercriminals and fraudsters can target any travel company, whether a large corporation or a small business.
Globally, the travel and leisure industry has been hit hard by digital fraud, with an increase of 155.9% in the last year, according to a new report from Phocuswright. Credit cards, personally identifiable information, reward programs, and the public internet are among the most common targets of cyberattacks in the travel sector, according to Phocuswright. In the future, artificial intelligence and the metaverse may pose vulnerabilities.
According to the study, 88% of corporate boards see cybersecurity as a business risk rather than a technical issue. The challenge for business leaders is managing “internal corporate friction ” with marketing and operations teams wanting to simplify access to information that legal and financial teams prefer was never captured in the first place.
We want to share some eye-opening aspects of the report in the article.
- Social media influencers who claim having large followings and high engagement may mislead travel sellers if sound vetting processes are not followed.
- Hotels and airlines that provide Wi-Fi services must be aware of individuals capable of spoofing internet access points with the same network ID as the real thing.
- For validation, hotels often only require a name and room number from dining outlets and recreational facilities. Guests’ names and room numbers may be misheard at the front desk or in a lost key packet, causing erroneous charges to be applied to their room and not discovered until departure.
