The scenery and natural beauty of Switzerland are breathtaking. Swiss towns and villages are some of the most picturesque in Europe. We will bring close to you some of those extraordinary places worth visiting, especially now during Advent and the Holiday season. Check the magic of Fairytale towns in Switzerland – Part I
Due to Switzerland’s landlocked location, it offers a compelling mix of cultural diversity and influence. Visiting the prettiest towns in Switzerland is like exploring a storybook.
Whether you want to see snow-capped mountains, pristine lakes, or fairytale castles, we suggest visiting some of the most picturesque villages and towns. Especially during the Advent season, you can enjoy and find it even more magical.
Andermatt
A rustic, traditional ski village nestled in the Swiss Alps, Andermatt embodies the authentic alpine lifestyle. A great winter sports destination, it’s also excellent for outdoor activities. Snowshoeing, ice skating, and cross-country skiing are all available during winter.
A powder lover’s paradise, Andermatt attracts skiers looking for the freshest, fluffiest powder. A high altitude and plenty of off-piste skiing make it a good destination for snow-sure skiing. However, skiers just starting might need more time to find it suitable.
In addition to its sports facilities, the village itself boasts a picturesque backdrop. With an impressive number of fondue options, there are plenty of classic Swiss eateries to enjoy.
This year’s season starts on 17 December, and on the same day, you can participate in the winter edition of the Verve Techno Festival.

Chur
Chur is the oldest city in Switzerland, with a settlement history dating back over 5,000 years. It features a beautiful 800-year-old cathedral and a car-free Old Town.
Taking in the fairytale surroundings on foot is a great way to explore the winding streets and inviting atmosphere.
In addition to its impressive cultural and culinary offerings, Chur is a vibrant alpine city. A picturesque mountain range and magnificent wilderness surround it at the head of the Rhine Valley.
The Christkindlmarket Chur in the city centre of Chur brings a beautiful, Christmassy atmosphere from 25 November – 23 December 2022.
Gimmelwald
Gimmelwald is a small mountain village that is often mistaken for Grindelwald. However, the Swiss Alps’ less-known gem sits in a remote and hidden location far from the main tourist attractions.
Its cliff-top location offers views of towering peaks, beautiful valleys, and alpine scenery.
In contrast to some famous Swiss resorts, Gimmelwald is a quiet, traffic-free village. As a result, the town has a quiet charm, along with quaint buildings such as cosy timber homes and creaking hotels.
The organic farmers of Gimmelwald hold a Christmas market with their products in Muerren.

The alpine village of Grimentz has a rich cultural heritage. It feels as if you have stepped back in time when you walk through the traditional village. There is a fairytale charm to Grimentz thanks to its centuries-old buildings lined with colourful flowers.
During winter, skiers and tobogganers can enjoy skiing and tobogganing, while during the summer, hikers and via ferrata enthusiasts can enjoy hiking and via ferrata.
But this December, do not miss FééRIeS De NOëL / GRIMeNTZ.
There will be more than 30 stalls and activities at this unique Christmas market. You’ll find everything from teas to decorations, chocolates to jams to soaps. You can sample many different flavours from different countries and regions, mainly if you are a sweet tooth. Take advantage of the dates, 10th and 11th December only.

Grindelwald
There’s nothing quite like the small-town appeal and charm of Grindelwald, one of the larger resort towns in the Jungfrau region. No doubt, part of its magical appeal is that it is a picturesque and remote town. Yet, with its cosmopolitan flair and classic fairytale look, Grindelwald is a vibrant village.
In addition to being a popular holiday destination all year round, it is a great place for scenic walks. Summertime brings lush green valleys with Alpine cows and colourful flowers.
There are various ski trails to explore in the winter months with snow-covered mountainscapes.
Night skiing, skating and sliding are a thing in this region.
Gruyères
Almost like being in a storybook, this medieval Swiss town looks like it came straight out of a fairytale. The picturesque buildings and charming cobblestone streets of Gruyères make it a popular tourist destination. An undulating landscape surrounds all of this.
A speciality of Gruyères is its cheese and chocolate. Several museums are also located in Gruyères. Explore the collections from a bygone era at Gruyères Castle, a medieval castle.
So this holiday season, you can visit the Christmas Market in Gruyères. For two weekends every Advent season, the idyllic village hosts a beautiful Christmas Market that showcases 40+ vendors selling handmade gifts and tasty treats. This year those dates are the 9th-11th and 16th-18th of December 2022.
