Airbnb bookings in the canton of Vaud now require you to pay a tourism tax.
It is estimated that around 6.3 million overnight stays were booked through Swiss online booking platforms in 2021.
Whoever books a room or holiday home in the canton of Vaud via the Airbnb platform will pay a tourist tax in the future. Guests will automatically be charged corresponding amounts per night and per person from the beginning of April 2023
As Airbnb announced last Thursday, the tax will be transferred to the municipalities in the canton of Vaud. After adjusting several legal bases, Airbnb and the Vaud Association of Municipalities have agreed.
The agreement will cover a total of 20 municipalities at first. It is possible for the other municipalities in the canton of Vaud to conclude the agreement later. The new automated collection procedure was communicated to affected hosts by Airbnb in Vaud.
The booking platform and the Association of Vaud Municipalities have reached their ninth tourist tax agreement, according to Airbnb. Lucerne, Zurich, Basel-Landschaft, Basel-Stadt, Zug, Geneva, Schaffhausen, and Freiburg have similar agreements.
In 2021, 6.3 million overnight stays were booked through online booking platforms in Switzerland, according to the European statistical office Eurostat. Based on the Federal Statistical Office BFS’s count of overnight holiday stays this year, 84 % of all visits were in holiday accommodation.
