According to the Commission, 333,728 youths applied for travel passes. According to the announcement, this shows the great interest among young people in taking a DiscoverEU tour across Europe. Participants took a multiple-choice quiz as a selection measure.
Young Europeans born between 1 July 2001 and 31 December 2003 were eligible to apply for this round. Additionally, 19 and 20 year-olds could apply after their rounds were postponed because of the Covid-19 pandemic. Explore Europe by Train
Applicants will have the option of travelling alone or in a group of up to five people between March 2022 and February 2023 (subject to possible health restrictions due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic). To support the Green Deal, participants will travel mainly by rail, except those living on islands or in remote areas to take part.
With DiscoverEU now a part of Erasmus+, young participants will have more possibilities such as pre-departure information training or meet-ups throughout Europe.
The European Commission launched DiscoverEU in June 2018. Over 130,000 travel passes issued to more than 685,000 candidates since then. As a result, 66% of candidates travelled outside their country of residence by train for the first time.
Unfortunately, Swiss Youth is not eligible for the DIcoverEU program, but we found another great initiative that applies to young Swiss citizens.
Alpine Initiative
The Yoalin project is eligible for all citizens of the Aplin region of Europe aged 18 to 27 years. Applications usually start in the spring. With this project, youngsters will be able to travel for free and discover the alpine region of Europe. Additionally, France, Switzerland, Italy, Germany, Austria and Slovenia participate in this wonderful project.
Explore and take advantage of such a superb sustainable initiative.
