Americans’ vacation plans to Europe
Americans’ vacation plans to Europe may be affected by the war in Ukraine. Most US travellers are concerned about the war in Ukraine and its effects on their travel plans to Europe, according to a recent survey conducted by MMGY Travel Intelligence.
To understand how the war affects traveller sentiment and behaviour, MMGY Travel Intelligence conducted surveys of hundreds of US travellers planning to visit Europe.
According to the survey’s main findings:
Two-thirds (62%) of US travellers cite security concerns about the Ukraine war as a factor affecting plans to travel to Europe, more than double the number (31%) who cite Covid-19 health and safety concerns as a factor
47% of travellers plan to wait for an improved situation in Ukraine before visiting Europe this year
50% of respondents are concerned that flight delays, train cancellations, and cruise cancellations may occur, in addition to possible border closures.
According to MMGY Global CEO Clayton Reid, travel sentiment turned positive during Covid-19 much more quickly than survey instruments during the crisis. According to today’s results, this reaction may repeat itself in the future.
Providing flexible cancellation and rebooking policies is the best way to address this hesitancy,” Reid said.
Reid also believes that this hesitancy is short-lived and that before the peak travel season to Europe, sentiment will return to much more favourable levels.
We are wondering how much our Swiss incoming agents and operators will feel the impact of these views from the American travellers. Also, we should not forget the strong position that the Swiss Franc has lately, making those local services more expensive for the incoming foreign tourist.
