In a recent study conducted by the European Commission, over 70,000 residents from 83 European cities participated in a comprehensive survey evaluating various aspects of their living experience. The criteria included infrastructure, healthcare, culture, security, environment, education, and work opportunities.

Surpassing Expectations with a 97% Satisfaction Rating”
Zurich, the Swiss economic metropolis, is top of the list, where an impressive 97% of respondents expressed satisfaction with their living conditions. This marks a notable improvement from the previous EU Commission report in 2020, where Zurich held third place.
A Tie for Second Place with 96% Satisfaction
Copenhagen, the Danish capital, and Groningen, a Dutch city, share the second spot with an equally high satisfaction rating of 96%. This reveals a consistent commitment to quality of life in these European cities.
Tech Hub Surprise
Surprising many, Cluj-Napoca, the second-largest city in Romania and a tech industry hotspot, secured a place in the top ten with a 94% satisfaction rating. Known for job opportunities and upcoming flight connections, Cluj-Napoca continues to be prominent.
Uncovering the Less Popular Destinations:
Southern and Eastern Europe’s Challenges
Contrastingly, the study also highlights less popular destinations, mainly in southern and eastern Europe, where residents express lower satisfaction levels. Palermo, Italy, garnered the lowest rating at 62%, followed by Athens, Greece, and Istanbul, Turkey at 65%.
Overall Satisfaction Remains High
Despite variations, the study indicates an overall high level of satisfaction, with approximately nine out of ten residents enjoying their city life. While there’s a slight dip compared to 2019, the general sentiment remains positive.
The Unpopular Ten: Cities with Lower Satisfaction Ratings Revealed
The study highlights the ten with the lowest satisfaction ratings for those curious about the least popular cities. Palermo, Italy, claims the bottom spot, followed by Athens, Greece; Istanbul, Turkey; Tirana, Albania; Naples, Italy; Belgrade, Serbia; Rome, Italy; Skopje, North Macedonia; Miskolc, Hungary; and Podgorica, Montenegro.
