Check out the best Carnival Parades around Switzerland on these dates and happenings. In case you missed any event in February, don’t worry; the celebrations continue in march.
Rapperswil Carnival – Feb 10 – 21, 2023
The City of Roses will become the City of Confetti after skipping last year for the first time since 1975. Rapperswil Fasnacht On the link, you can check all he activities and events which will be available for a visit till 21t of February.
Zug : Zuger Fasnacht – Feb 16, 2023
The annual carnival celebration in Zug, called Fasnacht, highlights the city’s year. “Schmudo” or “Dirty Thursday” marks the beginning of the week on Thursday before Ash Wednesday. During the festival, chesslete, a noisy tradition that begins at five in the morning, is played. It transforms into a vibrant sea of colour during “Guggenmusik” and other festivities. Shrove Tuesday is the last day of Carnival fools celebrations. As a result, according to tradition, the devil or winter is driven away by the festival.
Zurich: ZüriCarneval , Feb 24th – 26th, 2023
There are many parades, costumes and Guggenmusik at the Züri Carnival, which is not the biggest but always good fun. The Züri Carnival can be found here.
Basel: Basler Fasnacht Feb 27th – Mar 1st , 2023
In Switzerland, the Basler Fasnacht is the largest Carnival, dating back to 1376. Even UNESCO has recognized it! Then this is the Carnival to visit if you’d like to go outside your city. Three full days of celebration begin on the Monday after Ash Wednesday! The parade will return after being absent last year due to the pandemic.
On Monday morning, the streets will be alight with colourful lanterns beginning with the “Morgestraich” at 4 AM. You can participate in the festival for two more days and must wear your “Plakette” pin so that all can see it. Visit the Basel Fasnacht website to learn all about it.
Appenzell: Appezöller Faschned – Feb 16th – 18th, 2023
With Vecheti Wölt, Appenzell will turn the tables in 2023. In other words, the parades will continue while the spectators roam! Therefore, there will be no crowds at Saturday’s march.
The Appenzell Carnivale for children has unique costumes that are not found anywhere else. For example, children dressed in old firefighter gear ride makeshift horses called Botzerössli.
Broc: Carnaval de Broc – Feb 16th – 19th, 2023
For the 45th year in a row, the Carnaval de Broc attracts visitors from all over Switzerland. Approximately 30 floats and groups take part in the main parade.
Sion: Carnaval de Sion – Feb 16th – 20th, 2023
Sion Carnival’s 47th edition will feature the clever theme of “PROHIBI SION”. The four days will be filled with festivities, including a children’s parade on Sunday.
Solothurn: Fasnacht Solothurn Carnival – February 15th -22nd , 2023
The Solothurn Carnival usually lasts for a week. Local businesses and shops decorate their display windows in response to the occasion.
While carnival events will be reduced in 2023, the legendary GUSO band night will continue. Solothurn’s streets and alleys will be filled with 14 local Gugge bands during this time. Take a walk, and you’re bound to run into a costume band or group.
Fribourg: Bolzenfasnacht – February 18th – 21st, 2023
During Bolzenfasnacht, Fribourg’s old town turns upside down. Bolzen refers to the people who live in the Au area of Lower Fribourg. French, Swiss-German, and Standard German magically mix in one language in most households in those parts. Really, not a joke.
