Switzerland to face record-breaking traffic jams this summer
Switzerland to face record-breaking traffic jams this summer. An article was released a few days ago in “Sonntagszeitung“. Holidaymakers will face significant disruptions at Swiss airports this summer, as well as significant delays for drivers, according to the Touring Club of Switzerland (TCS). In addition, TCS predicts record-breaking traffic jams on Swiss roads and motorways over the next few weeks.
Switzerland to experience record traffic jams
TCS director Jürg Wittwer said many people and families would choose to go on holiday using their cars due to the increased cost of flying and airport disruptions at home and abroad. In addition, drivers from Germany, the Netherlands, and Scandinavia will hevily use Swiss roads to get to holiday destinations in Italy and the Mediterranean, which could cause delays.
Due to COVID, many people have avoided public transportation and flying, so the TCS “assumes that vacations by car will be more popular this summer”. As the Swiss school holidays approach, the TCS predicts record traffic jams in mid-July and mid-August. Southbound traffic expects near the Gotthard Tunnel and San Bernardino Pass.
On weekends, Switzerland experiences the most traffic jams
To avoid road accidents and breakdowns, Wittwer urged Swiss drivers to check their vehicles before departing.
Wittwer joked, “it’s not enough to leave work two hours earlier on Friday and drive off – you’ll realize at the Gotthard that you weren’t the only one thinking of this.” Wittwer advised against travelling on Fridays, Mondays or weekends to avoid the jams. “If you want to travel faster, you should take your vacation from Wednesday to Wednesday, for example,” he concluded.
We wish you a great Holiday and hope this kind of warning will make your trip more accessible and convenient.
