Eventful November – Part II
LATE AUTUMN WALKS AT A MODERATE PACE II Eventful November (Part II)
A couple of days ago we shared with you some interesting events really worth visiting in Basel, Geneva and Ticino Region.
But events in Switzerland happened in many different locations and regions. Eventful November (Part II)
So here we go with our suggestions!
Jura and the Three lakes
By mid-November, Jura Canton is up to celebrate St. Martin’s Day, a traditional festival in Ajoie and Porrentruy. The festivity comprises the conventional Feast of St. Martin (Nov 13-14, 2021) and the following weekend, known as the “Revira” (Nov 20-21, 2021).
Both weekends, Porrentruy hosts the St. Martin’s Market, highlighting local crafts and artisan products, while restaurants in the region offer guests traditional dishes and a savoury menu that features pig. St. Martin’s Day is a festival of peasant origin and friendliness, where authenticity and typical flavours of the region play the leading role.
Bern Eventful November (Part II)
Head before sunrise to Bern on 22 Nov for the annual Onion Market – Zibelemärit, one of Switzerland’s most colourful and unusual festivals. The hallmark of this traditional farmers ‘ market is streets lined with food and souvenir stalls and a carnival atmosphere filled with the inviting aroma of onion pie and confetti.
From as early as 04:00 am, a folk one-day event held on the fourth Monday of every November brings together farmers and onion producers from all over the canton with more than 50 metric tons of onions and garlic! Onion comes to town in all forms, sizes and colours, from painted onion bulbs to plaited and woven in a very decorative, artsy way into onion wreaths, onion necklaces and onion garlands.
Because – onion/it is the star of the show! Even restaurants in the city’s Old Town offer an array of onion-based dishes such as traditional onion tart, crispy garlic bread-chnoblibrot, onion soup, onion pizza, or sausage with onions all wonderfully matching with a glass of a warming glühwein.
Vaud Eventful November (Part II)
Speaking of wine, it is another popular get-together theme during November. Head to Vaud canton to Vevey’s wine fair Foire aux Vins scheduled from Thursday, 18 Nov, to Saturday, 20 Nov. There you can sample more wines at the tasting room of the Galeries du Rivage than 25 producers from the area.
The City of Vevey is known for the famous Fête des Vignerons, the winegrowers festival, a unique and trendy event whose tradition dates back to the 18th century. Vevey is surrounded by the Lavaux Vineyards, a region consisting of 830 hectares of terraced vineyards. It is the first Swiss intangible cultural heritage inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2007.
