We recently visited a beautiful, unique island in Canton Zug and got the impression that only a few people are familiar with it. We just wanted to share this magical history and a great place to spend an afternoon or morning: delicious food and a perfect short boat ride. So visit Schwanau Island while we still have this marvellous summer weather, trust us, it’s worthed.
Short history
Schwanau Island, located in the canton of Zug, Switzerland, has an intriguing history that dates back centuries.
Situated in Lake Zug, this picturesque island has witnessed various transformations and played a significant role in the region’s history.
The earliest records of Schwanau Island trace back to the 13th century when the noble family of Hünenberg owned it. It was initially used as a defensive stronghold due to its strategic location. Over time, the island passed through the hands of several influential families, including the Habsburgs and the Counts of Kyburg.
During the Middle Ages, Schwanau Island became renowned for its medieval fortress. The imposing structure was constructed to protect Zug and its surrounding territories. The fort served as a residence for the local bailiffs and administrators responsible for upholding law and order in the region.
In the 16th century, Schwanau Island witnessed a pivotal event in Swiss history. In 1529, the Protestant Reformation reached Zug, leading to a religious divide among the population.
