Maya Advises: 5 Benefits From Personal Development
This week in our regular column Maya Advises, Maya is presenting us the ” 5 Benefits From Personal Development”
Working on your personal development has many benefits. As I am on a personal development journey, I have noticed considerable changes in my life and personality.
I do believe that personal development can save you in every considerable challenge.
Becoming a special parent and learning how to deal with this significant life challenge was the trigger that brought me on this journey of self-discovery.
These are my five favourite benefits from my journey:
Live in the moment
Previously, I was not even aware of how overwhelmed I felt from the past. I was not aware of how often I was anxious and worried about the future. Rather than being present in a conversation with a friend or taking a stroll with my daughter, I constantly run thoughts through my mind.
I was thinking about things from the past. What could I’ve done differently? Or, how could some situations turn out better? How could I have avoided some mistakes?
I would be anxious and worry too much about the future. I learned to stay present, be mindful, and live in the moment.
Just remember, the essential thing is that you cannot feel anxious, sad, or desperate if you are focused on the present moment.
Awareness and realisation of capabilities in any situation
As part of my research, I took the time to examine my personality through many different assignments. What are my values? How can I change my perspectives if they do not serve me?
These are not the things that pop up in our minds. To achieve this goal, you will need to put some effort and time into it.
Our behaviour changes as we learn more about ourselves, our values, priorities, and why we make certain decisions. Our behaviour determines the results we get.
Important note: To see where I want to go, I need to get a clear sense of where I am now.
Time management
The more I learned about time management, the more I realised that it’s not about whether we have time or not. Instead, I realised that time is something that can be created.
Previously, I would answer automatically: I don’t have time for x,y, or z. I applied that approach whenever I got a suggestion that wasn’t a part of my usual routine.
“No time” is no longer a concept to me. As a result, I now emphasise creating priorities, setting clear goals, and prioritising things. I would have missed so many good opportunities in the last three years if I hadn’t learned this concept.
Now that I know how my 24 hours are structured, I can make the most of them:
– be as productive as possible
– have fun as much as possible
and do all the things I want to do.
Having learned to invest my time instead of wasting it, I reduced my stress immensely.
Important note: Do not waste your time. Invest in it!
Put yourself first and then the Universe
There is no such thing as the ‘Law of attraction will give to me,’ and all anyone has to do is imagine, wish and sit where they feel comfortable. It doesn’t happen like that. Whenever I have experienced help from the Universe or witnessed a miracle in my life, there has always been something I have done first.
I needed to move out of my comfort zone by making that uncomfortable call, applying somewhere, doing research, setting up goals, calming myself down, and looking for help. But, of course, there was always something I had to do first, and then the benefit would come.
For me, this was huge. During some periods in my life, I was passive and viewed myself as a victim. In my life, I was reactive (not proactive) and just observed my circumstances without acting on them.
I would always have the excuse of why I don’t do something I should have been doing. I used a million excuses, but not anymore.
My life, choices, actions, and decisions are now under my control.
Never-ending learning
Each new finding leads me to another book, workshop and the next level of understanding myself. There is no final destination in the personal development process; it is ongoing. You can always learn more and understand more. Things keep getting better and better as I know and understand more about my life.
For example, learning to solve discipline issues can lead you to more remarkable accomplishments.
